How do I use the Use Relative Media Paths feature?

By default, when you add media into PVP, it references the media on the computer via an Absolute Path; that is, the link that PVP uses to access the media on the computer is the full path from the root of the hard drive to the file itself. This is beneficial in many cases (it allows you to be able to move your Show file without having to worry about your media), however it makes it difficult to share Shows and their media across multiple computers (as the Show would be referencing the media on the original computer which might not be the same path on the new computer).

If you will be sharing your Shows across multiple computers then you can tell your Show to instead use Relative Paths for the media. You turn this feature on by going to File > Use Relative Media Paths. (You can revert to Absolute Paths by going to File > Use Absolute Media Paths.)

When using Relative Paths, PVP references the media relative to the Show file on the computer. The recommended use for this would be to create a folder on your computer that houses both your Show file as well as all of your media; these files can be in sub-folders if needed. Once you have created your Show, added the media into the Show, then saved the Show in the folder, you can move that folder anywhere on the computer or even to another computer, and because the media is linked using a Relative Path, the Show will continue to be able to find it.

To see an example of the Relative Path feature in action,  click Open Sample Show in the Welcome Window.

PVP always links to the media based on where the media was when the media was added into PVP. This means that if you rename/move/delete media after you add it into PVP, then PVP will not be able to find the media and it will thus show the media as missing.

When PVP can’t find a piece of media, PVP will show a warning triangle to indicate that the media is missing. To fix this, right-click on the Cue, select Fix Invalid Action, and click on the name of the media that needs to be fixed; a dialogue box will appear where you can select a replacement file to be used for that Action.
