Updating Blackmagic Desktop Video on Windows 11

Blackmagic Desktop Video is the driver that allows your Blackmagic video device (DeckLink and UltraStudio Devices) to input or output to or from your computer. These drivers do not automatically update, but from time to time we update how our software interacts with them to utilize new or more stable capabilities which will require you to update these drivers. Below are the steps to download and install a new version of the drivers.

We are currently recommending Blackmagic Desktop Video 14.3 or Higher. Should the below steps not work for you, please contact BlackMagic Support.

1) Prep before installing

  • Quit ProPresenter/ProVideoPlayer/ProScoreboard and any apps using your Blackmagic device

  • Disconnect Thunderbolt/USB devices if possible.

  • Make sure you’re logged in as an administrator.

2) Download the latest Desktop Video for Windows

  1. Go to Blackmagic’s Support Center.

  2. Under Latest Downloads, select Desktop Video for Windows.

  3. Click Download Only if you don’t want to fill in the registration form.

3) Uninstall the old version (recommended for clean installs)

  1. Open SettingsAppsInstalled apps.

  2. Locate Blackmagic Desktop Video.

  3. Click the menu → Uninstall → confirm.

  4. Restart Windows.

4) Install the new version

  1. Run the downloaded installer (DesktopVideo_x.x.x.msi).

  2. Follow the wizard prompts.

  3. When asked, approve the installation of Blackmagic Design drivers.

    • Windows may show a “Windows can’t verify the publisher” or “Do you want to allow this app to make changes?” → click Yes or Install.

  4. When the install finishes, restart your computer.

5) Reconnect and allow the device

  1. Plug in your Blackmagic device after restart.

  2. Windows should detect the hardware and apply the updated driver.

    • If you see a pop-up asking to trust Blackmagic Design drivers, select Install this driver software anyway.

  3. To confirm:

    • Right-click StartDevice Manager.

    • Expand Sound, video and game controllers or Blackmagic Design.

    • Your device (UltraStudio, DeckLink, Intensity, etc.) should appear without a yellow warning icon.

6) Verify the installation

  • Open Desktop Video Setup (installed with the package).

  • Check the About section to confirm the Desktop Video version.

  • Confirm your hardware is listed and shows as Connected/Active.

7) Troubleshooting if the device doesn’t show up

  • Driver not installed correctly:

    • Reopen the installer, choose Repair, then restart.

  • Device not appearing in Desktop Video Setup but visible in Device Manager:

    • Unplug/replug the device, use a different USB/Thunderbolt port, or try a different cable.

  • Yellow exclamation in Device Manager:

    • Right-click → Update driverBrowse my computer for drivers → point to C:\Program Files (x86)\Blackmagic Design\Desktop Video\Drivers.

  • Still not working: Run the installer again but this time Uninstall, restart, then reinstall.

Notes & Tips

  • Always restart after driver installation—Windows won’t load the capture/playback drivers correctly until you do.

  • If you run multiple Blackmagic apps (like ATEM Software Control or Resolve), updating Desktop Video keeps them in sync with device firmware.
