How to Add Text Animations to a Slide

Overview

Text animations were introduced in ProPresenter 22. Text animations build a slide's text in a character, word, or line at a time. You can add one to a text object as a Build In from the Build tab of the Editor, or you can apply one to several slides at once with the Bright Side theme or a theme of your own.

Add a text animation to a slide

  1. In Show view, right-click the slide you want to animate and choose Edit Slide.

Right-click a slide and choose Edit Slide

  2. In the Editor, select the text object (in the Objects list or on the canvas). Then click the Build tab in the inspector on the right, and click Add Build… next to Build In.

Select the text object, open the Build tab, and click Add Build

  3. In the build picker, open the category menu at the top left (it shows All by default) and choose Text Animations.

Choose Text Animations from the category menu

  4. Hover over an animation to see a quick preview of it, then click the one you want.

Pick a text animation, such as Blur Reveal

The animation now appears under Build In, along with its options. To swap it for a different one, click Change.

Once a text animation is added, the Build Out option is removed, because a text animation handles both the build in and the build out.

Customize the animation

Once you've added a text animation, its options appear below its preview under Build In. The options vary a little by animation. Nearly all of them have Grouping, but only some have Direction.

Text animation options under Build In

OptionChoicesWhat it controls
GroupingBy Character, By Word, By Line, All at OnceWhether the text builds in a character, word, or line at a time, or all at once
DirectionFrom Left, Center, From RightWhere the reveal starts (only on some animations)
MotionNone, Grow, Shrink, Up, DownA movement the text makes after it builds in
StyleSubtle, Standard, DramaticHow much motion there is. It appears only when Motion is set to something other than None.
DurationSliderHow long the whole text animation takes

Click Reset to Default Parameters to put every option back to its default. You can also set the build's order and timing (with the slide, after the transition, or on click) in Build Order at the bottom of the inspector.

Delivery

Use Delivery to choose how the text is revealed. For song lyrics, you'll usually leave it on All At Once. For sermon notes, you can choose By Bullet or Underline to reveal the text one bullet or one fill-in-the-blank underline at a time.

Delivery options: All At Once, By Bullet, Underline

Start

By default, any text with a text animation is set to start With Slide. To build the text in later, such as for sermon notes, change Start to On Click or After Transition.

Start options: On Click, After Transition, With Slide

Apply a text animation to a whole presentation with a theme

The quickest way to add text animations to every slide is with a theme. ProPresenter 22 includes a new theme called Bright Side, with templates for sermon notes and lyrics that already have text animations applied. You can also create your own theme with the text animation settings you want.

  1. In Show view, select all the slides in your presentation.
  2. Click Theme in the toolbar, open Bright Side - Animate, and click the template you want, such as Lyrics - Blur/Grow.

Select the slides, click Theme, and choose a Bright Side - Animate template

Now when you click each slide, its text animates in using the theme's text animation.

Tip: Changing the Slide Transition affects how the Text Animations Look

The transition setting at the bottom of the slide grid changes how text animations look when you move between slides. With Cut, the current slide's text animates out while the next slide's text animates in, so the two overlap briefly. If you don't want that overlap, set the transition to Dissolve. The text then only animates in, and the previous slide dissolves out more quickly. You can shorten the dissolve duration to make it clear even faster.

Set the transition to Dissolve and shorten the duration
